Lance Armstrongs Brand Strength Will Determine Scandal Outcome - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Lance Armstrongs Brand Strength Will Determine Scandal Outcome - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career No one ever really foresees a scandal coming but both how you establish your brand, and how established your brand is, aids greatly in how you weather one. Lance Armstrong has seen this true to form during his recent USADA inquiry. Lance’s performance in his sport combined with his brand strength, certainly plays a huge role in how his brand is perceived. Becoming a hero in the world of cycling, representing his country multiple times on the world stage, along with being a cancer survivor and creating Livestrong are what made Lance larger than life. Could he have created The Livestrong Foundation without being as dominating in his sport? Most definitely. Would it be one of the largest and most influential cancer charities that it is today? Most likely not. It’s Lance’s creation of a globally recognized foundation, along with his triumph through personal tragedy, that are the biggest factors in the public’s perception of his brand. If cycling dominance was all Lance Armstrong stood for, he would be in different spot than he is now. His brand has many facets, with his charitable arena being as strong as his cycling one. By using his spotlight to create a platform for change, the scale of his scandal was minimized by the positive Armstrong has done in other areas. Christian Piatt said it best in a recent Huffington Post piece, Armstrong also has the benefit of both empathy and admiration, beyond his sports audience. He garnered his fair share of both when he was diagnosed with, and then overcame, cancer, and he bolstered the latter by launching the now-ubiquitous Livestrong nonprofit, dedicated to cancer research and eventual cures. In great part to his social media savvy, Lance has been able to build brand recognition for all areas of his brand, increasing it in size each year. His network of 3.7M twitter followers and 2.4M Fans on Facebook allowed him to funnel his statements on the USADA review and draw attention to those other areas of his brand such as Livestrong, health and wellbeing, or engaging with his fans through inviting them on a run/ride. In doing so, Lance has created his own medium to influence and manage information flow. Even though he appears larger than life because of his accomplishments, Lance’s actions on social media give a picture of good will, personal innocence, and accessibility, which affects public perception during a trial/scandal situation. As the final piece also affecting public perception, let’s not forget that being accused vs being found guilty makes a big difference. This has clearly shaped how Lance is handling his situation. Not only has he addressed the accusations from the start, but he has also spent time and money fighting them, all the while drawing many of the public to his side. It’s when people try to cover up or downplay their guilt as seen by the public reaction to SF Giant’s Melky Cabrera, that the public has little, or no, sympathy. Through his actions, Lance has increased the level of support not only for him but also for his foundation. As stated on Businessweek.com, “That same day Armstrong was banned, the number of donations to his foundation nearly doubled to $60,900 from $32,300 the day before. And the number of donations nearly tripled to 937 from 313 the day before, according to the foundations data.” We know that Lance did not build his brand to weather a scandal, and neither should you. Your brand should be built based on your passions, your brand vision, and making sure you use your spotlight to make an impact.  Should a scandal happen, knowing how you established your brand will give you confidence in how you weather the outcome. 6 Key Characteristics of Effective Book Titles - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

6 Key Characteristics of Effective Book Titles - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Titles are more than just the words that appear on the front cover of your book; effective book titles not only sell more books, they can launch a follow-up series of books while creating a memorable personal brand for the authors products services   for years to come. A few weeks ago, I discussed how power of Sarah Susankas Not So Big brand. This week, Id like to explore some of the key characteristics that contribute to brand-building book titles. 6 key characteristics of effective nonfiction book titles Although there is no single formula to effective nonfiction book titles, the following 6 key characteristics show up over and over again: Promise. Effective book titles are those that promise readers an obvious benefit. In todays culture of less, nonfiction books have to compete for scarce resources, i.e., less time to read, less money to spend, etc. My first best-selling book, Looking Good in Print: A Guide to Basic Design for Desktop Publishing, was an immediate a lasting success. Its benefit was obvious, after all, Who wants to look like a fool in print? Competing titles, like Graphic Design for the Electronic Age, didnt offer readers as obvious a benefit, and its sales suffered. Identification. Few books will ever appeal to everyone. In every field, there are different expectations and different experience levels. Looking Good in Print targeted newcomers to design, secretaries and administrative assistance who were increasingly given newsletter and brochure production responsibility, even though they did not have any previous design experience. By adding a single word, Basic, to Looking Goods subtitle was enough to build a strong emotional resonance with newcomers to design without talking down to them. Today, newcomers turn to the for Dummies or Complete Idiots Guide to series titles. Transparency. Brand-building books often have deceptively simple titles. The best titles have no creativity to them, for example, Jill Konraths perennially popular Selling to Big Companies or C.J. Haydens Get Clients Now! These titles contain common, everyday terms that express the promise without using jargon, fancy or technical terms. My target market was newcomers to design, who were interested in keeping their jobor moving up to greater responsibilities, rather than Design Breakthroughs or Cutting Edge Design. They described their goals as looking good in print and, today, many would still use the term searching for help online. Metaphor. Metaphor takes transparency to the next level. Metaphors instantly explain and position a book title by referencing popular and cultural terms. Perhaps the best example is Jay Conrad Levinsons Guerrilla Marketing Series, although Garr Reynolds Presentation Zen runs a close second. The power of metaphor is not only that they make titles easier to understand, they also make the titles easier to remember. Brevity. Effective titles are often short and transparent, but are backed-up with longer subtitles that explain and provide important detail. For example, Carl Sewall and Paul B. Browns Customers for Life: How to Turn that One-Time Buyer into a Lifetime Buyer or Bob Burgs Endless Referrals: Network Your Everyday Contacts Into Sales. The titles are short, so they can set in a large type size where theyll attract attention to the subtitle which completes the sales job. Specificity. Numbers add credibility and urgency to book titles. Numbers can promise readers faster achievement of their goals, i.e., Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days. Numbers add credibility to goals, i.e., 21 Pounds in 21 Days. Numbers also simplify complex tasks by breaking goal achievement into a series of steps, i.e., Marcia Yudkins 6 Steps to Free Publicity. How to evaluate your proposed books title Evaluate your proposed books title in terms of the above characteristics. Ask yourself questions like these: Promise. Does my proposed book title offer readers an obvious and desired promise, or benefit? Identification. Have I targeted the title to my most desired reader segment, instead of trying to appeal to everyone? Transparency. Is the titles promise expressed using the same everyday language my intended readers use? Metaphor. Have I used the story-telling power of a metaphor to instantly communicate my books promise or position it relative to the competition? Brevity. Did I use the power of metaphor to bring my books proposed title to life and make it more memorable? Specificity. Have I reinforced the promise of my books title with numbers and specifics that add credibility and promise fast results? Improve your ability to choose an effective title for your book The best way to improve your ability to come up with the perfect title, the one that creates a personal brand for yourself and brands a line of follow-up products and services, is to train yourself to analyze the titles of books in your field as well as outside your field. Create a list of the top titles in your field, and analyze them in terms of the above 6 questions. Rate their performance, and score the titles. Dont just analyze the titles of books in your field, occasionally visit a different field, and apply the 6 questions to those books, too. The more you examine the titles of existing books, the easier it will be for you to come up with the perfect title for your books. In fact, I invite you to share your thoughts about the effectiveness of the titles of currently-popular books in your field. Using the comments area, below, list a few of the titles in your field and analyze each of them in terms of the above 6 key characteristics. Author: Roger C. How Hanna Landed Her New Dream Job! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How Hanna Landed Her New Dream Job! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Chuck Dietrich, the CEO of SlideRocket ® (www.sliderocket.com), a brand-new online presentation software site that has all the earmarks of  quickly becoming a “must-have” tool for job hunters looking for a unique, creative way to break through all the “clutter” surrounding today’s hiring managers and brand themselves as being new, different and better than the “typical” job applicant. During our discussion, Chuck related the remarkable story of Hanna, a recent new hire at his company. Let me share Hanna’s story with you because it is so illustrative of how a job hunter today can step out of her “comfort zone,” think creatively, prepare a workable plan, and then effectively compete forâ€"and land!â€"her new dream job. For three solid months Hanna took the “traditional” approach to finding a new job: She applied online for numerous positions. (Bad move in today’s extremely competitive job market.) She also applied through corporate Human Resources at a number of companies. Even though she said she had a “few” interviews as the result of her job hunting  activities, it soon became clear to her that she wasn’t making any genuine progress toward her goal of finding, and then landing, a new job. As a result, Hanna said she stepped back and reassessed her entire job hunting campaign, and rather than letting the job hunting process continue to control her, she decided to start controlling the process itself! Here is how she set about doing just that: Knowing that her strengths included strong  communication skills and a high level of creativity, she asked herself  this question: “Where could my skills be most effectively utilized?” Her answer: Marketing,  communications, public relations, graphic design, advertising and similar  fields. Next, she asked herself this key question: “What types of companies have need of my skills and talents and would, at the  same time, be ‘fun’ places to work?” To identify potential hiring companies that would meet her criteria, Hanna dived right in and began her research activities, and one of the companies that quickly rose to the top  of the list was SlideRocket.com. Did she then go online at the company’s website and apply for a position as so many of today’s hiring companies recommend? No! Did she contact Human Resources at SlideRocket ® and make an application, as again, so many job hunters do today? Not Hanna! Rather, she took the “gutsy” and quite non-traditional  approach of locating the CEO’s Twitter ® “handle” and Tweeted her newly created SlideRocket ® presentation directly to him! Chuck said he received the Tweet as he was boarding a flight to New York City, and it so impressed him that he called Hanna immediately upon landing. Chuck said that he hired Hanna one week later. “Her SlideRocket ® presentation was great but that wasn’t what did it,” Chuck told me. “It was that her message conveyed passion. I immediately knew that Hanna was someone who could not only get things done, but also someone who knew how to figure out how to reach the right people. I didn’t need to know where she went to school or her work history to know that I definitely wanted to speak to her.” (Click here to see Hanna’s job-winning SlideRocket ® “presentation résumé,” referred to as a Présumé ® on SlideRocket ®.) I think you will agree that Hanna proved she is indeed a remarkably creative job hunter, as well as one who clearly knows how to brand herself quickly and effectively as considerably more than “just another person looking for a job.” The fact of the matter is, however, you, too, can utilize the same basic principles and approaches that Hanna used to land her dream job to land one of your own. Let’s briefly examine the approach Hanna took and see how you can take the same (or similar) approach to get you where you want to goâ€"to land your own dream job! Step 1 As Hanna did, you must first decide what, specifically, it is you want to do, for whom and where. Once you’ve made these critical decisions, you must then put a laser-like focus on developing and branding yourself as possessing the values and contributions you know you can bring to the hiring company. Step 2 Through online (or other) research begin developing your ideal company profile. (You’ll recall, that as Hanna researched her ideal companies, several surfaced but she quickly decided that SlideRocket ® was her top choice. You should expect this same type of experience, of course, and you will then have to decide which company/companies best meet your criteria.) Step 3 Create your “marketing” materials. For most job hunters, this includes a résumé, targeted cover letter, “smile file,” “brag book”, etc. Hanna knew that the traditional résumé would, at best, weakly brand her. She felt that a traditional résumé simply could not adequately convey her passion, creativity and abilities. And, because SlideRocket ® was her hiring company of choice, and since the company’s product is online presentation software, she quickly (and correctly) determined that the best way for her to break through the “clutter” at the company was to use its own software to brand herself and get her message and value proposition in front of the right people. (In this case, the CEO!) Does that mean that you should use SlideRocket ® to communicate with hiring companies of your choice? (Actually, that might indeed be a good idea, before the program becomes widely adopted, as I suspect it will, and it still is considered unique!) The point here is, regardless of which approach you decide to use, just make sure it is other than the “traditional” approaches used by most job hunters, i.e., applying online or going through Human Resources! (In previous blogs at this site, as well as in “‘Headhunter’  Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed . . . Forever!,” I cover a wide range of acceptable, workable approaches to use.) Step 4 Next, as Hanna did, get your value proposition into the hands of the highest level person who can have an influence in hiring you. Most people target levels that are far too low, perhaps out of a fear of “offending” people at the higher levels! Just as Hanna certainly wasn’t intimidated by the CEO’s “rank,” you shouldn’t be, either. As I’ve said time and time again in a variety of forums, including, of course, in blogs on this site, in order to be successful in finding your next job, your dream job, in today’s job market, you have to have the courage, creativity and commitment to think (and act) “outside the box.” Hanna certainly demonstrated that she was up to the task. Are you? _________________________________________________ A PERSONAL ENDORSEMENT OF SLIDEROCKET ®: I was so impressed with the ease-of-use and dynamic features offered by SlideRocket ® that I just recently subscribed to the program and created a presentation for my executive recruiting firm! Should You Hire a Technical Director to Write Your Resume?

Should You Hire a Technical Director to Write Your Resume? As a business professional who is looking for a career change, you may want to consider using a resume writing service. Resume writing is very time consuming and can be very frustrating for an applicant. There are many resume services out there that claim to offer your resume the best attention it needs, but does your resume deserve such a service?A resume writing service can cost you thousands of dollars, but if you are willing to spend the money to hire one, it could end up saving you hundreds of dollars in fees and lost time. With a resume writing service, you can make the last step of a job application process a breeze and a lot less stressful than it would be on your own.You may think that it would be best to hire a technical director. This may seem like a good idea at first. However, as a professional in the field, I would never hire anyone who did not have the experience needed to properly and efficiently manage a resum e writing service. One who does not have the required experience is going to end up doing more harm than good to your resume.Besides, you can save yourself time by working with a technical director that has no clue about resumes. As a resume writer, you should know how to write resumes. It is imperative that the technical director has worked with resumes before.Instead of hiring a technical director, find a resume writing service. Resume writing services use highly qualified and experienced professionals to help you through the entire process of writing a great resume. They will help you choose a format letters, create cover letters, ensure your resume is not altered or changed once submitted, and they can even provide you with a professional service background check. What is important to remember when choosing a resume writing service is that the technical director has worked with many other professionals, so he or she should be able to guide you toward the right path to success. If you choose a resume writing service that does not work with multiple professionals, you will likely waste more time and money than necessary. And this can lead to a low quality resume. You should also take some time to assess how much money you really want to spend in order to get a professional resume writing service. You do not want to get into a huge contract with a resume writing service only to find out you could get a lot more money to produce a high quality resume for less.Remember that choosing a resume writing service that works with the technical director will give you the best chance to succeed in a short amount of time. You will not have to wait hours or days on end to get the information you need and a resume writing service will help you get the job you really want, without much stress.
