Lessons on charm from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan

Lessons on charm from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel BrosnahanLessons on charm from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel BrosnahanIt is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are eitherbeibei charming or tedious. ?Oscar Wilde,Lady Windermeres FanCan one learn to be charming or do you have to be born with it? It seems like some humans are just gifted with an innate sense of enchantment. They walk into a room and you are simply drawn to them and if you are lucky enough to speak with them, you never want to stop. They have that amazing quality of making you feel like you are the most interesting person in the world. For example, one could never teach themselves to be as charming as Audrey Hepburn. She spoke with one of those beautiful but perplexing accents (as it welchesnt quite British but it welchesnt really anything else), walked like a ballerina and had a Yorkie named Mr.Famous that she would ride around with on her bicycle. If I did that last one, my friends would not speak to me. But was Hepburn always that whimsical or did she teach herself to be that lovely?Another famously charming and charismatic lady who went by the name of Marilyn Monroe was a firm believer that charisma was something you could absolutely create. Behavioral expert and author Olivia Fox Cabane summed it up in this video in which she talked about the legendary actress walking through Grand Central unrecognized because she wasnt on.What Marilyn wanted to show was that just by deciding to, she could either be glamorous Miss Monroe or plain Norma Jean Baker (her real name). On the subway, she was Norma Jean, but when she resurfaced on to the busy New York sidewalks, she decided to turn into Marilyn. So she looked around and she teasingly asked the photographer, So, do you want to see her?TheMarilyn? And then, he said, there were no grand gestures, she just fluffed up her hair and struck a pose. And yet, with this simple shift, she suddenly became magnetic. An aura of magic seemed to ripple out from her and everything stopped. Time stood still, as did the people around her, who stared in amazement as they suddenly recognized a star standing in their midstSo perhaps we can all manage to incorporate a little more charm into our personality, we just have to work on it. I recently came across the embodiment of charm when I had the pleasure of meeting actress Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the titular character in the marvelous The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (and if you havent watched it, then you arent very marvelous.) It was the absolute grossest of New York days and yet sunshine seemed to surround her in a halo. It was at an event for the newAmericanExpressCash Magnet Card which the actress had partnered with. From the minute I walked into the room to meet her, the Emmy winner put me immediately at ease. She complimented my now wet hat and made me immediately feel at ease. Something charming people are really good at is making you feel that they are genuinely gla d to be meeting you (wet hat smell and all.)She also threw in just the right amount of vulnerability talking about some of her neuroses and Type-A personality flaws. A little bit of self-deprecation is a wonderful tool when you are meeting someone for the first time. It puts you on a relatable level, even when you are a beautiful Emmy-winning actress with the most pristine, alabaster complexion I have ever seen. She was generally interested in what I had to say and part of that was due to her excellent use of eye contact. Eye contact is something I am always working on as I feel like I start strong and then get lazy about it. But as Brosnahan went around that room that night and talked with the many different attendees she looked at each one of them like they were the only one there.Brosnahan, like many actresses, is also very expressive with her body, especially her hands. Psychologists believe that hand gestures actually help you communicate more effectively.Hand gestures are reall y a powerful aspect of communication, from both the speakers and the listeners end, Dr. Carol Kinsey Goman, body language expert and Ladders contributor said. In a 2015study analyzing TED Talks,it was found that the most popular speakers used an average of around 465 hand gestures,. This is almost twice as many as the least popular speakers used. Jazz hands for the win.Within five minutes of meeting her, I wanted to do anything I could to please her so much so that I didnt even hesitate when she told me to try a recipe she had made for the event. It was her familys famous cheese mound. Now, most people would not hesitate to eat a piece of cheese from a person on the street much less the star of an Amazon Prime series. But I am not most people (I prefer my cheese from Netflix miniseries stars.) No, but actually cheese is not my favorite. The stinkier the cheese, the harder it is to pronounce the name, or the more tiny the French village it was made in,by 80-year-old nuns, the farther away I walk. At wine and cheese parties I really find the cheese part to be a distracting inclusion. So eating blue cheese, much less a mound of it, is not usually something I would do for a stranger. Maybe for a significant other or you know if the pope asked me or if there was some sort of ransom situation that required me for some reason to eat a lot of cheese but for the woman who gave us The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all hesitations around the potential of dairy-related intolerances disappeared. Now that is the art of charm.

Definition of Magic Realism in Fiction Writing

Definition of Magic Realism in Fiction WritingDefinition of Magic Realism in Fiction WritingThe term magic realism describes contemporary fiction, usually associated with Latin America, whose narrative blends magical or fantastical elements with reality. Magic realist writers include Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Alejo Carpentier, and Isabel Allende. First Use The term was coined first by German art critic Franz Roh in 1925, but it was Alejo Carpentier who gave the term its current definition, in the prolog to his book El Reino de Este Mundo. The marvelous, he writes, in a translated version, begins to be unmistakably marvelous when it arises from an unexpected alteration of reality (the miracle), from a privileged revelation of reality, an unaccustomed insight that is singularly favored by the unexpected richness of reality or an amplification of the scale and categories or reality, perceived with particular intensity by virtue of an berregung of the spirit that leads it to a kind of ex treme state estado lmite. Gullivers Travels As the poet Dana Gioia reminds us in his article, Gabriel Garca Mrquez and Magic Realism, the narrative strategy we know as magic realism long predates the term One already sees the key elements of Magic Realism in Gullivers Travels (1726) ...Likewise Nikolai Gogols short story, The Nose (1842) ... fulfills virtually every requirement of this purportedly contemporary style. One finds similar precedents in Dickens, Balzac, Dostoyevsky, Maupassant, Kafka, Bulgakov, Calvino, Cheever, Singer, and others. But Carpentiers intention was to differentiate lo real Maravilloso americano from the European surrealist movement. In his mind, the fantastic in Latin America was not achieved by transcending reality, but was inherent in the Latin American experience of reality After all, what is the entire history of America if not a chronicle of the marvelous real?

3D Printing in Diesel Engine Manufacturing An Interview with Roger England

3D Printing in Diesel Engine Manufacturing An Interview with Roger England 3D Printing in Diesel Engine Manufacturing An Interview with Roger England 3D Printing in Diesel Engine Manufacturing An Interview with Roger England, Cummins, Inc.When you think of large engine manufacturers in the 3D printing space, Cummins, Inc., is likely not the first company that comes to mind. But that doesnt mean the diesel engine maker is taking a pass on this explosive new technologynot by a long shot.Roger England, director of materials science and technology, technical quality, and intellectual property at Cummins, recently represented the company on a panel at ASMEs AM3D conference in Boston. We spoke with him further about the impact of 3D printing on diesel engine manufacturing at Cummins, including the challenges of bringing metal additive in line with typical production quality procedures, and its benefits to the environment.ASME Cummins is not jumping on the 3D printing bandwagon as publicly as some other companies. Why is that?Roger England I think the additive manufacturing industry right now is a lot like the automotive industry around the turn of the 19th century. When folks had cars back in the 1890s or 1900s, it was common that those people were fairly affluent and they could afford to hire a chauffeur who was also a mechanic that could keep the car running.Electric Waste Heat Recovery Turbine Expander. Image cummins.comWe see the saatkorn thing in the current metal 3D printing equipment on the market. It is very labor-intensive to keep it running. Weve had direct experience with several pieces of equipmentsome better than othersbut all of them have a constant stream of updates and changes that the manufacturers are trying to respond to as they learn things in the field. And people do things with them that they dont expectlike running one 24 hurs a day, seven days a week for three months, just as fast as you can get stuff on and off it. And sometimes that means ma chines arent robust enough for such frequent and ongoing use.The units that we have here are finally getting past the 50 percent uptime availability measure, and thats after we deduct time for scheduled maintenance. Its been a big challenge.ASME Is this an industry-wide problem?RE You hear different stories of different units from different people. When you go to some of the older polymer systems that have been out for 10 years or so, its just like buying an older cartheyre a lot more robust than new ones, but also have a lot less capability. It takes a long time to get all of the functionality into the system at a level of robustness and availability that people expect in traditional subtractive equipment, but its just the normal growth and learning phase of any new technology.ASME What else is preventing Cummins from using 3D printing for production parts?RE Weve actually helped generate some data that shows you can take a metal additive machine and run a part on it, and then go to another machine, same brand, same make, same model, but different location or serial number, run the same part with the same set of user inputs, and the properties are different.Until we can get it right every time, its not something were going to engage. But we will use additive in areas where we can add controls, like prototypes. The ability to print prototypes to speed things up is a huge advantage for us as were doing engine development.ASME Do you have specific examples where Cummins is already using metal 3D printing?RE Weve actually made injection mold tooling using metal additive manufacturing, because it gives an ability to put very complex cooling passages in the mold.In the process of injection molding these parts, you actually shoot the plastic in, and as soon as it gets cool enough that it skins over on the outside, you can eject it. The faster that you can get it ejected, the fewer molds you need, because the higher your production rate. By changing the design of the cooling passages and then making the surface on them a little rougher finish than usual, we get better heat transfer through it, and that allows us to increase our production rate.A lot of times our volumes arent great enough to financially justify using injection-molded plastic, because of the cost of amortizing molds. Having additive now makes plastic injection molding a viable and cost competitive process for lower volumes.ASME Tell us about environmental benefits Cummins sees for additive.RE Our new engines are the most efficient theyve ever been. And we are doing everything we can to make our manufacturing processes just as efficient. If we could move some parts from sand casting aluminum into an injection-molded plastic, that would consume a lot less energy during manufacture. And if you look at the entire carbon footprint of the part through its life cycle, its much friendlier.ASME What part do you see more advanced materials and processes playing in 3D printing?RE Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where Cummins maintains a research lab are looking at layering materials as we additively build parts How can we have parts that have improved physical properties, in just the areas we want?So were back to environmental stewardship. When you start talking about high-quality materials like nickel and chromium which create severe environmental impacts due to mining, we have to put a lot of that into Cummins parts because of the high temperature and pressure operating environment were in. If we could limit these metals to just the areas of the parts where its necessary, that also helps to decrease our impact on the environment, and still give us the type of product we need. Its about the whole process, from cradle to grave. Additive gives us an opportunity to improve our stewardship of the environment, and were going to be on the cutting edge of that. The new frontier of additive manufacturing can be intimidating to navigate fortunately, theres the ASME A M3D conference to help guide you as you integrate AM into your business. Learn more about the ASME Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Conference and Expo here.

Are you being conned the truth about internships

Are you being conned the truth about pro domoships Are You Being Conned? The Truth About InternshipsPosted March 10, 2014, by Molly Wiltshire-Bridle A simple search of the internship/work experience category on Pedestrian Jobs reveals hundreds upon hundreds of results, each boasting the unrivalled opportunity for the right candidate (read prospective doormat) to get a foot in the door of their dream job. Theres just one catch. Salary $0. With youth unemployment reaching an unprecedented average of 12.4 per cent, mora and more young people are turning to unpaid internships in a last ditch effort to bolster their career prospects. In many industries, most commonly the creative arts, interning is fast becoming par for the course. But is it really worth it for that throwaway line on your resume? When I first reached out for people to come forward with their experiences, I received some pretty harrowing tales. People whod been relegated to the role of coffee-runner, several whod wound up answering phones all day, and, believe it or bedrngnis, even someone whod been left to amuse themselves with colouring books. Perhaps even more worrying than this unscrupulous division of labour are the countless stories of those who carry out legitimate, revenue generating responsibilities in exchange for squat. In its outspoken article,The Hoopla even reports instances where interns have been billed out at hundreds of dollars an hour, without ever seeing a dime for their efforts. The fact of the matter is that not all internships are created equal, and many of those who eagerly volunteer themselves as free labourers find themselves at the mercy of disorganisation, humiliation and exploitation. So what can we do about it? Free labour in disguise At the crux of the problem is the fact that young people often find themselves looking down the barrel of a gun when it comes time to transition from study to employment. Many young people are intimidated to question the status quo because so many employers are now recruiting unpaid interns. Sometimes they internalise their failure to find a job as their own shortcoming, without realising how systemic the whole situation is, says Deputy Director of Interns Australia, Colleen Chen. Having studied communications at uni, Im no stranger to the internship expectation that runs rife throughout the industry. Watching so many of my peers wilfully sacrifice themselves at the opfertisch of The Intern served as a sort of subconscious coercion, and eventually, I found myself following suit. Not because Id scored a role with my dream employer, or because I thought the opportunity was going to cement my career in the industry, but because everyone else was doing it. Unfortunately, this zombie mentality is shared by a vast majority of students and graduates. Hell, most of us dont even know what our basic rights and entitlements are when it comes to slogging it out in an internship. So, before you next throw your hand in the air for that life-changing internship at a high street fashion label, do yourself a favour, and get your facts straight. The legal stuff It turns out that theres a pretty reasonable chance that the internship/s youve been involved in havent been entirely above board. At present, the whole thing is so poorly regulated that most participants and their employers are completely unaware that unpaid internships are actually a big no-no, except when conducted according to a strict set of guidelines. Heres the lowdown Some employers will try to write off the value of a young persons labour by referring to their lack of experience. However, as menial and basic as some intern tasks may be, it is still deserving of minimum wage because it is displacing a paid position, argues Chen. Ever written free copy for a companys website? Designed a logo or some marketing material? If the business has gained significant benefit from the work youve undertaken, then its likely that theyve violated the requiremen ts laid out by the Fair Work Ombudsman, and could cop a fine exceeding $50,000. A fair days wage for a fair days work Rather than point the finger solely at the big bad corporations of the world, its time to take collective action to achieve more widespread awareness of whats fair. If youre about to embark on an internship, the following checklist from Interns Australia should help you ensure that youre not being exploited, undervalued, or simply wasting your time Make sure you have a contract set out at the beginning of the internship Document all the hours and types of tasks that are asked of you Got a problem? Speak to the employer about it. Sometimes it can be a genuine oversight If nothing changes and you still believe your internship is exploitative, then call the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 for some advice. In genuine cases of exploitation, back pay and compensation may be rewarded to the intern Take direct and collective action to raise awareness about this issue We woul d like young people to be able to identify when the line between experience and exploitation has been crossed. We would like them to know that they have options other than giving up their labour for free and that there are groups like Interns Australia who are ready to stand up for the exploitation of young people, says Chen. If there is no collective pressure, businesses will only start a race to the bottom, and the already few entry-level positions will diminish even further. When done right, internships have the potential to provide genuine insight into your chosen profession, and can often open doors to a range of opportunities. Just remember, though, becoming an intern need not be a rite of passage. Sometimes, starting up a small project with friends and colleagues can show much more initiative and leadership than to say that you had been a serial intern for many years where you did data entry and posted pictures on social media most of the time, enforces Chen. There are plenty of other fish in the sea of career opportunities, so never feel pressured to resort to a stint as an unpaid minion (particularly if, like most regular 17 to 24-year-olds, youre already subsisting on mi goreng). Above all, stand up for yourself, because we could all afford to learn a lesson from Parks and Recreations sardonic intern, April Ludgate, and adopt a little more cynicism next time were asked to empty the entire floors rubbish bins. Interns Australia has recently joined forces with Unions NSW to launch a parliamentary enquiry into unpaid internships and work experience. Theyre calling for any employer who takes on an intern to be required to sign a code of practice ensuring adequate supervision, a formalised program structure and that the work undertaken would not otherwise be performed by a paid employee. Still not sure whether to make like Hannah Horvath (she may not be the voice of a generation, but she sure gave exploited interns a voice when she did this), and work for free?
